Films Shot In Dallas, Texas (Study Guide) $10.09 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: JFK is a 1991 American film directed by Oliver Stone. It examines the events leading to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and alleged subsequent cover-up, through the eyes of former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (played by Kevin Costner). Garrison filed charges against New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones) for his alleged participation in a conspiracy to assassinate the President, for which Lee Harvey Oswald (Gary Oldman) was found responsible by two Government investigations: the Warren Commission, and the House Select Committee on Assassinations (which concluded that there was another assassin shooting with Oswald). The film was adapted by Stone and Zachary Sklar from the books On the Trail of the Assassins by Jim Garrison and Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy by Jim Marrs. Stone described his fictionalized film as a “counter-myth” to the “fictional myth” of the Warren Commission. The film became embroiled in controversy even before it was finished filming, after The Washington Post national security correspondent George Lardner showed up on the set. Based on the first draft of the screenplay, he wrote a scathing article attacking the film. Upon JFK’s theatrical release, many major American newspapers ran editorials accusing Stone of taking liberties with historical facts, including the film’s implication that President Lyndon B. Johnson was part of a coup d’etat to kill Kennedy. After a slow start at the box office, Stone’s film gradually picked up momentum, earning over $205 million in worldwide gross. JFK went on to win two Academy Awards and was nominated for eight in total, including Best Picture. The film opens with newsreel footage, including the farewell address in 1961 of outgoing Presid… More: |

#1s…and Then Some $13.99 Three weeks before the release of this double-disc best-of-and-then-some collection, Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn, who as Brooks & Dunn were one of the most successful duos in country music history, decided to call it a day after 19 years, 40 singles (half of which topped the country charts), ten studio albums, and a slew of awards. While their announcement stunned contemporary country fans, recent albums showed the pair beginning to rely too heavily on their formula and not enough on new ideas. Still, as far as the industry was concerned, they went out on top. #1s…and Then Some contains 30 tracks spread over two discs and includes two new songs. Disc one opens with Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride’s barroom and stadium rock killer “Honky Tonk Stomp,” which opens the set with special guest guitar blazer Billy Gibbonsof ZZ Top, and disc two opens with the pair’s own “Indian Summer,” a midtempo ballad that’s as fine a summation of their collective career as listeners are likely to get. Dozens of familiar cuts are here, from their first smash “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” to the gorgeous cover of B.W. Stevenson’s “My Maria” and a slew of other hits and B-sides — including “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” and “If You See Him/If You See Her,” both with Reba McEntire. While it’s true that many of these tracks have been collected on the two previous hits collections, this is the first time that all the number ones have been in one place, and it’s the best argument there is for the legacy they leave behind. Remember, this duo originally consisted of two solo artists who became a group as the result of an arranged marriage by their record company; the combination worked better than anyone ever dreamed. They may return to being solo acts (Dunn has written for a slew of country artists over the years), but with greatly expanded musical palettes and media-savvy aesthetics because of their longstanding relationship. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi |

’89 Live in Japan $9.99 Sometime in 1992/1993 a revamped Quiet Riot featuring vocalist Kevin DuBrow with Bob Rondinelli on drums (around this time Rondinelli had also filled in on an Aerosmith gig one night when Joey Kramer wasn’t available — call him Mr. Fill-In) performed at a little-known club in Billerica, Massachusetts called Mr. Tipps. It is one of those suburban gigs we call “the last rung on the rock & roll ladder” and it’s a pity because Quiet Riot had more than just a clever name, and more than the cachet of being the professional birthplace of guitar wizard Randy Rhodes. To those who don’t know the story, DuBrow faced a mutiny by the band he founded and Pasha Records released an album in 1988 with two different members, titling the disc, interestingly enough, after the first Japanese release by the original group. This DVD, ’89 Live in Japan, comes from that strange lineup in between and features vocalist Paul Shortino of the group Rough Cutt as well as bassist Sean McNabb and an uncredited Jimmy Waldo — keyboard player from the groups New England and Alcatraz. Why Waldo is treated like a hired hand is one of those unique situations which seemed to develop after Flo & Eddie called Mountain’s organ player Steve Knight “the most useless man in rock & roll.” The statement was far from accurate, of course, but it was humorous and Mott the Hoople and Aerosmith would both push keyboardists to the side and pretty much off-stage after that infamous quip. Though the 1988 self-titled Quiet Riot album faced horrible reviews and little or no commercial acceptance, this DVD is actually quite enjoyable. As a live band, Q.R. had that long-hair-’80s-thing down pat. What replaces original vocalist DuBrow’s personality is a very slick and well-executed heavy metal show. “Stay With Me Tonight” might not be a rock & roll classic, but it comes off well live and along with the nine in-concert tracks there is a bonus of the video shot for “Stay With Me.” This is no mere clone band going t… |

‘Merican [EP] $7.99 After a seven-year hiatus, punk-pop pioneers the Descendents return with ‘Merican, a solid five-song EP that picks up where the band left with 1996′s Everything Sucks. The group’s first release on Fat Wreck Chords, after a short tenure with Epitaph, finds Milo Aukerman, Bill Stevenson, Stephen Egerton, and Karl Alvarez revisiting the timeless lovelorn attack of cherished songs from their past like “Wendy,” “Clean Sheets,” and “Silly Girl” on the disc-opener, “Nothing With You.” Made whole with an infectious chorus, unrelenting rhythms, and a buoyant guitar, the song gives way to the ferocious title cut, which harks back to vintage Bad Religion as it explores the black marks on America’s history, from slavery to Vietnam. But such sociopolitical commentary is rare from the ‘Dents, who downshift to the palatable midtempo number “Here With Me,” which eventually gives way the manic, spastic “I Quit,” a nervous, edgy “Catalina”-like throwback. Only the closing instrumental, a hidden number without an official title, is worth skipping, as it drags in a way that no Descendents number has a right to. ~ John D. Luerssen, Rovi |

‘Til Tuesday Members $8.5 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Aimee Mann (born September 8, 1960) is an American rock guitarist, bassist, singer, and noted songwriter. Aimee Mann grew up in Bon Air, Virginia, graduated from Midlothian High School and attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but dropped out to sing with her first punk rock band, the Young Snakes; the band released the EP Bark Along with the Young Snakes in 1982, and a compilation album was issued in 2004. In 1983, seeking a return to “sweetness and melody”, she co-founded with Berklee classmate and boyfriend Michael Hausman the new wave band ‘Til Tuesday, which achieved success in 1985 with its first album, Voices Carry. The title song is said to be inspired by Hausman and Mann’s breakup. The producer, Mike Thorne, in a March 1999 article disputes this and states the lyrics originally had Mann singing to another woman. The gender was changed due to pressure from the record company. The video became an MTV staple, winning the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, although Mann’s then-signature spiky hair would lead some to dismiss the group. Mann was featured on the Rush song “Time Stand Still” (from Hold Your Fire, 1987) which became a minor UK hit, singing backup vocals and appearing in the music video. Her laughter is also heard at the start of “Force Ten,” from the same album. With Mann playing an increasingly important role in songwriting, ‘Til Tuesday released two more albums, Welcome Home and Everything’s Different Now. On their final tour, musician Jon Brion joined the band, which broke up in 1990 when Mann left to start her solo career. Around the time of the first album’s release, Mann began a romantic relationship with Jules Shear; they broke up before the final ‘Til Tuesday album, which contained … More: |

((Un)) [Bonus Tracks] $10.99 Dan Black was one of the main proponents of the ? wonky pop? scene in late 2000s, that is, unabashedly ? pop? but with some brains and musical invention, and not just slavish re-creations of current musical trends designed to get your songs in the charts. His early singles (which are collected here on his debut album) were strutting, ultra-hooky songs that mixed up hip-hop, rock, funk, and pop into a very appealing sound fronted by Black? s smooth and insistent vocals. ? Yours? and ? Alone? are both very inventive tracks, and easy-to-digest songs that fans of radio pop could get into, “Symphonies,” which is his high point as an artist so far, slows things down and wraps Black? s voice in a beautiful string sample, and shows he can deliver some real emotion. In other words, Black? s singles are a perfect manifestation of wonky pop. ((Un)) works almost as well. The singles are the best tracks, but there is plenty of competition. The rocking, dancefloor filler “Pump My Pumps,” the stuttering, fake hip-hop jam “I Love Life,” and the fun and huge-sounding “U + Me =” all come very close to dethroning the previously released singles for top honors. Black? s arrangements are always fresh-sounding, never too glossy, and filled with surprising little touches that let you know you are in the hands of a whiz kid, not just a pop singer. ((Un)) is a very impressive first record that shows tons of promise. If Black can keep the right amount of wonky in his pop, he could do something truly wonderful (like an album full of songs as good as “Symphonies”). [The American release of the album adds three tracks, including a version of "Symphonies" featuring Kid Cudi rapping the verses.] ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi |

(1) Hydrocortisone permeation study using a synthetic membrane, a mouse skin and an Epiderm(TM) cultured skin, (2) Preparation of orally disintegrating tablet of melatonin and acetaminophen, (3) Pharmacokinetics of terbinafine in penguins. $49.99 The first project of this thesis is an in vitro study. This study was performed with 8 hydrocortisone topical products on the market for the purpose of comparing one Tec Lab product, a Corticool gel, to the other seven common products on the market. The permeation of these products was tested with three types of membranes: a synthetic membrane, a mouse skin, and an Epiderm(TM) using a Franz Cell apparatus. The synthetic membrane seemed to over-estimate the hydrocortisone permeation through the skin. Mouse skin has a higher permeation compared to human cultured skin, Epiderm(TM). Corticool gel (1% hydrocortisone), which has a higher hydrocortisone solubility compared to other creams and lotions, showed a significantly higher drug diffusion rate through all of the three membranes. The Corticool gel exhibited better hydrocortisone permeation than the Prescription hydrocortisone cream 2.5%. Cortizone-10 ointment (1% hydrocortisone) showed a very low hydrocortisone permeation through all of the three membranes. It is predicted that the same comparative behavior would be observed in vivo on applying these formulations. Corticool gel is suggested to be used for fast action treatment.;The second project related to a preparation of orally disintegrating tablets of melatonin and orally disintegrating tablets containing sustained-release beads of acetaminophen. A combination of superdisintegrants, amino acids, effervescent materials, and sweeteners was placed into a melatonin tablet and then compressed into a normal-shaped tablet. The melatonin tablet exhibited a short disintegration time in water, had adequate hardness, and passed the friability test. This tablet also tasted good and could be used for children and vulnerable subjects having difficulty in swallowing.;The acetaminophen tablet combines two desirable properties: fast disintegration and sustained release of the drug. Acetaminophen sustained-release beads were added inside the tablet. The tablet disintegrated very |
